One of my favorite things is finding new music. I love categorizing things, so let me break down the different ways that I find new music:
1. Coming across a band I never heard of online, or through a friend.
2. Finally listening to music by a band that I've heard of for years, but I never felt the need to try out, and now that I've finally relented I realize that I LOVE their music
3. Bands that have one or two songs that you know well, but you never heard anything else from them, and when you finally get your hands on the full album, you realize that they have a bunch of great songs
My top discoveries over the past year and a half are:
1. Paramore - "Riot": I never heard of Paramore before this year, and I saw on some music blog that they are great so I downloaded the album. I wasn't disappointed. Great stuff. I'd describe it as a less-gloomy Evanescence.
2. Descendents - "Cool to Be You": I never heard of the Descendents before, but heard of them through friends. Loved the music. I was surprised that I never heard of them before bec theyve been around for so long. Favortie song: "'Merican". Awesome workout song. I love the line:
"i'm proud and ashamed
every fourth of july
you've got to know the truth
before you say that you've got pride"
Listen to them if you like Green Day or The Offspring.
3. Dashboard Confessional - "The Places You Have Come to Fear The Most": I've heard of Dashboard Confessional before, but I never heard any of their music. This album is great. It has a very raw feeling with great lyrics.

The Descendents song "Mass Nerder" is the theme song for my blog. You HAVE to hear their classic first album "Milo Goes To College".
Love TPYHCTFTM as well. First emo album I loved.
Acoustek by Instrumental has the coolest sounding classic/rock/I don't even know how to identify it sound.
LOVE Dashboard! A lot of people will tell you that they went seriously astray with "A Mark, A Mission, A Brand, A Scar" - but that is total crap. I love that album and have for years. Also, I tend to lump in: The Get Up Kids, Jets to Brazil, Sunny Day Real Estate, Texas is the Reason, The Academy Is... oh man I could go on, but I'll stop for now
Oh yes, nameless,faceless has the right idea, especially with SDRE (possibly my favorite band ever.)
Their first album 'Diary' is a must-have. It laid the foundation for most of todays Screamo bands.

nameless & frumpunk: SDRE? Really? I downloaded a bunch of their stuff and was unimpressed. Any songs in particular I should give another try?
I had the same thing with Say Anything's "In Defense of the Genre", someone recommended them to me and I hated the music at first, but after a few tries, I love it now.

Well taste is subjective, but here's my picks for SDRE to sample:
Diary: 'In Circles', 'Song About an Angel', 'Pheurton Skeurto, '48'.
LP2 (Aka The Pink Album): 'Theo B', '5/4', 'Waffle'.
How It Feels To Be Something On: 'Every Shining Time You Arrive', 'Two Promises', 'Guitar and Video Games'.
The Rising Tide: 'One', 'Rain Song', 'Disappear', 'Snibe'.
Each album has a different style, so at least listen to a couple songs from each. You can stream most of the from playlist.com and seeqpod.com I expect.
